ABOUT US

Merelava is an empowered property development business. Although, headquartered and based in Sandton, Johannesburg; we also have a rest of Africa mandate, having consulted on projects in Ghana and Swaziland respectively.

 

Merelava undertakes all developments as a principal for either its own account or third party investors. We specialise in both green & brownfields developments which include new builds, refurbishments, residential conversions and development consulting where appropriate.

Gavin completed his BSc in Building Science (Hons) at WITS University in 1993. He then joined LTA Grinaker as a construction manager in their low cost housing division based in the Vaal. He was later promoted to a project management role overseeing various projects from housing to retail/industrial.

In 1998 he joined African Bank’s project finance division where he was tasked with assessing construction projects particularly in the low cost housing sector. However, in 2004 he co-founded Aengus Properties having acquired a seed portfolio of mothballed highrise office buildings from a listed entity (ApexHi) in the Johannesburg CBD.


From 2005 to 2011 Aengus Properties converted several office buildings into affordable rental housing or student housing. Gavin was the MD of the business overseeing all aspects of the operations from development to property management (in-house). He sold his stake in the business in order to explore opportunities outside of the CBD, founding Merelava in
2015.

Tabane completed a BA (Law) degree at the University of Johannesburg in 2011, and then opted to pursue a career in real estate instead. He worked a leasing manager for Citysky Properties which managed portfolio owned by Urban Ocean in the Marshalltown node of the JHB CBD. He was later promoted to role of residential property manager.


Seeking a new experience, in 2013 he joined Ash Brooke as a commercial & industrial property broker focussing on the Pretoria node. In 2014 he enrolled for the PG.Dip (Property Development & Management) at WITS University which he completed in 2016. During his post-grad studies he joined City Property as a commercial property manager and Blend Property Group as a junior asset manager.

In 2017 he joined Nedbank (Property Finance) as a relationship manager where his primary function was deal origination and structuring across all property types – residential, student housing, retail, industrial, commercial and filling stations.


In 2019 he left Nedbank to pursue business interests by joining Merelava as its commercial director. He also runs a Facilities Management business servicing various listed Landlords (REITs). He also lectures the Real Estate Development course at WITS University.
